Scale

The deposition of insoluble inorganic minerals is commonly referred to as scale. Common oilfield scales include:

  • Calcium Carbonate (calcite)
  • Sodium Chloride (halite)
  • Iron Carbonate (siderite)
  • Iron Sulfide (troilite)

These mineral deposits are found on wellbore tubulars and components. This occurs when the saturation of produced water is affected by changing temperature and pressure conditions in the perforations, liners and downhole equipment. The deposits can quickly block tubulars and stop production.
