The production of oil produces many waste materials. However, for sheer volume water is the #1 material. In fact in the United States up to 99% of the volume from older producing wells is water.

A widespread and cost-effective solution to water disposition is water disposal wells. However these wells are susceptible to blockage from common skin damage mechanisms:

  • Hydrocarbon carryover
  • Emulsion block
  • Changes in wettability
  • Inorganic scale
  • Asphaltene
  • Paraffin

Should these damage mechanisms cause sufficient blockage at the wellbore/reservoir interface the disposal well will have to be shut down resulting in the shut in of associated production wells.
